My first official writing gig (besides editor of the 6th grade year book) threw me into the foreign world of tattoos and graffiti. The founder of While You Were Sleeping Magazine, Roger Gastman, took street art extremely seriously, curating graffiti inspired gallery shows and spearheading the effort for the Corcoran’s inclusion of a Cool “Disco” Dan piece.
Roger moved from his hometown of Bethesda, MD to LA, but continues to promote street art as real art. In fact, LA’s MOCA is currently exhibiting “Art in the Streets” to much controversy.
While I approve of public art, I’m just not sure if spray painting “Crotch!” on train in Anacostia will really win over the critics. Keep it classy.
